Light Adjustable Lens

Light Adjustable Lens

Carolinas Center for Sight is proud to offer the revolutionary Light Adjustable Lens as an option for our patients. Our expert surgeons, Dr. Seltzer and Dr. Vasuki, both specialize in small-incision and bladeless femto laser cataract surgery, ensuring you receive cutting-edge care.

What Is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The Light Adjustable Lens is a state-of-the-art premium intraocular lens that contains light-sensitive materials that allow it to be adjusted following cataract surgery. It is the only IOL that allows your Carolinas Center for Sight cataract surgeon to modify its power after being implanted in your eye, offering a level of customization previously unattainable in cataract surgery.

After implanting the Light Adjustable Lens, you will be required to wear light protection glasses. These glasses protect your eyes from UV light and must be worn at all times except while sleeping, washing your face, or applying eye drops.

After receiving your final lock-in treatments, you’ll no longer need to wear them.

How Does the Light Delivery Device Work?

The Light Adjustable Lens uses ultraviolet light to adjust and modify its power. First, it’s implanted during cataract surgery, replacing your natural lens.

After healing, you’ll receive light treatments with a proprietary light delivery device (LDD). These are delivered in-office at Carolinas Center for Sight. Most patients require about one to three light treatments. During these treatments, you’ll sit comfortably in front of the light delivery device before receiving precise amounts of UV light delivered to your Light Adjustable Lens.

Using the light delivery device, the lens will change shape and power according to your unique visual needs. After each light treatment, you’ll evaluate your vision, and your ophthalmologist will determine if further adjustments are necessary to meet your desired visual outcomes.

Once you achieve your desired visual goals, you’ll receive two final lock-in treatments to permanently set the power of the Light Adjustable Lens. This process ensures that you attain precise, customized vision correction fine-tuning to your visual needs and preferences.

Who is a Good Candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens?

Although the Light Adjustable Lens is an excellent premium IOL, it’s not suited for all patients. You may be a good candidate for the Light Adjustable Lens if:

  • You have refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism
  • You have a stable prescription
  • You want to reduce your reliance on visual aids like glasses and contact lenses after cataract surgery
  • Your eyes are in good health
  • You do not have any chronic eye conditions
  • You’re healthy and don’t have any medical conditions that may make it more challenging to heal after receiving the Light Adjustable Lens
  • You’re willing to commit to follow-up visits and light treatments
  • You have realistic expectations about what the Light Adjustable Lens can achieve
